Classification of asphalt concrete

According to the different binders used, asphalt concrete can be divided into two categories: petroleum asphalt and coal asphalt [1]. Some countries or regions also use or mix natural asphalt.

According to the different types of aggregates used, it can be divided into crushed stone, gravel, sand, and slag. Crushed stone is the most commonly used. According to the different particle sizes of the mixture, it can be divided into coarse particles (less than 35-40 mm), medium particles (less than 20-25 mm), fine particles (less than 10-15 mm), and sand particles (less than 5-7 mm).

According to the different grading of mineral materials, it can be divided into dense grading, semi-open grading, and open grading. Open grading mixtures are also called asphalt crushed stone. Among them, hot-mixed and hot-laid dense-graded crushed stone mixtures are durable, easy to use, high in strength, and good in integrity. They are representative materials for building asphalt pavements and are widely used.

According to the composition of mineral materials, it can be divided into dense-suspended structure (such as AC-Ⅰ), skeleton-void structure (such as OGFC) and dense-skeleton structure (such as SMA).

Different countries have formulated different specifications for asphalt concrete. The technical specifications for hot-mixed and hot-laid asphalt mixtures formulated in China are asphalt concrete with a void ratio of 10% or less, which is further divided into Type I and Type II. The void ratio of Type I is 3 (or 2) to 6%, which is a dense gradation type; Type II is 6 to 10%, which is a semi-open gradation type; the void ratio of more than 10% is called asphalt crushed stone, which is an open gradation type; the physical and mechanical indicators of the mixture include stability, flow value and void ratio.
